Way before it was universally accepted to be a female surfer in the line up. It continued as I bodysurfed the shore dump at Coogee at 8. When I turned 14 I started riding a coolite at Tamarama, then as I progressed to a fibreglass board at 16, I cut my teeth at Maroubra and then finally Bondi Beach!
Surf City - Ramones - VAGALUME
With the surfing bug fully entrenched in my life, I competed in all levels of competition from club level through to Australian titles, and discovered the absolute joy of travelling the world to surf. It was often daunting, being the only woman in the surf. I wanted to change the way girls experienced surfing and wanted to encourage them, so teaching surfing was the next step. I set up Bondi Girls Surfriders Club BGSR in with some other like minded surfer girls, so women could feel safe to be able to compete in a girls only club and not feel embarrassed when constantly being compared to the boys.
R29 Original Series
It is an equal opportunity employer for both men and women. To be outside in the sun, near water, and nature with other amazing, powerful women of color, that experience in itself is so valuable. Roy, a Surf Sister Saturday participant. All of this while learning how to surf and meeting such incredible female surfers continues to be one of the greatest experiences of my life.
She has met such amazing, wonderful women and also made friends that I think she will grow up with. I wish every young woman could have such incredible and cool role models at this age. Thanks to all of you for your time, energy and wonderfulness. Creating an inclusive space in the surf community, with a broad range of women and girls who are committed to and celebrate each other, the environment, and surfing has been such a wonderful part of my life.
I am in awe of the constant positivity, compassion and sisterhood of the young women I've met through BGS.
Making Something Happen at the Oi Rio Women's Pro
Learning new things can be terrifying because nobody wants to be bad at anything. Particularly adults. So good to see you! I very much immediately felt this sense of community by simply showing up, which I think can be a rare and special thing.
Anybody who decides to do even one Saturday with BGS, I think will feel that they have the opportunity to take a risk in a space where people are going to be supportive and are going to be kind. It's such a special, positive community of badass women of all ages. I relentlessly pursue the things that I want to do.
